New Forum
Written by Tony Rogers

This is to let you know about some changes to our Forum.

The existing forum has been replaced with a new one. This is so that we can retain full control over the forum, and more closely integrate it with our website infrastructure.

Please do not make any new posts in the old forum, as we do not know how long it will be available for, and we would like to minimise the confusion about where to look for information. Feel free to browse the old forum for as long as it is available.

The URL for the new forum isĀ http://www.staffsmoorlands-ac.co.uk/forum . You can enter the URL directly in your browser and bookmark it, or alternatively go to the main website and click on the the menu item labeled "Forum".

The forum and website will be used as previously. The website is for more static, informational content, whereas the forum is for more dynamic and interactive content.

The forum software that we have chosen is the same as was used previously, so it should seem familiar. There will be minor differences due to running a slightly different version, and there will probably be some configuration differences too.

We have also attempted to make the colour scheme match somewhat with that of the website.

Open Document Format

Open Document Format

Wherever possible I will publish download-able documents in the above format. Typically such documents are published in Microsoft's Office or Works formats (.doc, .xls, etc.) and this can lead to problems.

It may be that you do not own a copy of Microsoft Office (it can be expensive, and bundled copies of MS Works are not necessarily compatible) and in that case it is difficult to view the documents. It is possible to download a copy of the Microsoft Word Viewer application from the MS website, which is free to use. Unfortunately you will be unable to update the documents if that is what you wanted to do.

There is also an Excel Viewer, for use with spreadsheets.

It may be possible that your computer's Operating System does not support Microsoft's products.

To get around this problem it is common to publish in PDF format, as tools to do this are readily available, and the necessary viewer is commonly distributed with most computers, or otherwise is a quick download away.

There is another way however. Microsoft's document format is proprietary and controlled by them. They decide whether your document can be read/written with their Office suite on your computer. Open Document Format is an Open Standards based format for office applications that is free for everyone to use. There are free word processors, spreadsheets and presentation tools available which use this format. These work on many Operating Systems, and are not tied to a particular organisation.

One such commonly used suite is OpenOffice.org . Not only can it read and write Open Document Format documents, but as a bonus it can also read and write most Microsoft Office documents, too.

If you would like to use OpenOffice.org on your computer go to their website and download it. If you need help with this, please contact me at the Webmaster address, and I will do my best to help/advise.

Website Standards - Email addresses
Written by Tony Rogers
Thursday, 10 January 2008 09:40

Please make sure that if you post an article with an email address in it, you write it as:

fred AT domain, and not:

fred@domain

This is to make life more difficult for spammers. It is not foolproof, but it makes a difference.

If you use the Feed Entries link to the left of each page, you can be informed every time there is a change to the page you are interested in.

You may need to use an RSS client on your computer, or you might be able to use you email client, instead. I use Mozilla Thunderbird which is FREE and excellent.

If you want any help with this, or anything else related to the site or computers in general; mail webmaster AT staffsmoorlands-ac.co.uk
