SMAC puts on the Summer Series, The Leek Half, and the Christmas Cracker races each year.
The Summer Series is a series of usually 10 races from late May, through in to August. They are on Thursday evenings, starting at 19:15 apart from two which start at 19:30 for logistical reasons. Each race's results count towards an overall prize at the end of the series. We usually count a runner's best 7 of 10 results to evaluate their final position.
There are races for the 'minis' (all ages up to 10); Juniors (aged 11 to 15); and Seniors (aged 16 and above). Distances and terrain are selected appropriately.
The Junior races have age based prizes for both the boys and girls. The seniors have so-called Vet categories every five years from 40 years old.
The Leek Half course starts in the lovely surroundings of Leek's Brough Park before heading out past the remnants of Dieulacres Abbey at Abbey Green and onto the village of Meerbrook. Runners then cross the bridge over Tittesworth Reservoir with a slight uphill to the Three Horseshoes Inn at Blackshaw Moor. From there, it is a left hand turn on the main Leek-Buxton road for less than half a mile, which is coned and taped off for runners' safety, and another left turn to Upperhulme. The road then climbs for a couple of miles with respite from time to time. This is the toughest part but occasional glances to the left give fabulous views of the Staffordshire Moorlands countryside as a reward. At Roache Grange, the fastest part of the course beckons with descent for several miles before reaching Meerbrook again and back to Brough Park via Abbey Green. Most of the route is on quiet country lanes with markers every mile.
The Christmas Cracker race starts at 11:00 a.m. starting at Tittesworth Reservoir near Leek. The race is a challenging 8-mile, multi-terrain run over the Roaches. Two miles of it are along the exposed ridge at 1500 feet ridge. So by all means come in festive fancy dress but please dress for the weather. If severe weather threatens, you'll still get the chance to give your fancy dress an outing, in a 5 mile race around Tittesworth Reservoir.
