Staffs Moorlands has a proud and illustrious history of running and racing on the fells, punching way above its' weight against the much bigger specialist fell clubs. The club has had English and British champions, from juniors to seniors to vets, with team successes too. Almost every year the club puts out a team or teams in the 'cup final' of the fell-racing year, the British Fell Relays, and is always represented in the championship races.
Champions and notable athletes of the club's past, going back to the 1980s, include Phil Bowler, Andy Wilton, multiple-vet champion Dave Neill, one of best of all-time Simon Bailey, plus junior stars like Kate Bailey, Jack Ross and Will Neill. In the last decade or so, Jon Whilock has completed the 3 major UK 24 hour rounds, plus Steve Pyke set long-distance records, with team wins continuing, particularly in the Peak District, but also further afield in races like the Weasdale Horseshoe. Overall and veteran success has also continued with runners like Gareth Briggs, Kerry Merchant and ultra runner Tracy Dean.
We are very much an active fell running club, be it local Peak District races or Lakes Classics, as well as teams entering the likes of the two day OMM events. In addition we also hold our own club Off Road Championship of around 18 races, from the short and sharp Shutlingsloe to the longer and undulating Roaches Fell Race or Half Tour of Bradwell as well as our very own Christmas Cracker race. All good races to get involved in no matter what your level of experience, so feel free to get in touch if you fancy a bit of the rough stuff mixed with friendly banter and healthy competition.
See you on the fells sometime!
